FAMILY DAIRY

Family farming is not simply a tagline on this dairy farm. More than 8 Van Hofwegen men and women work to manage with a sense of ownership and stewardship like only family can do. Our Family ensures that every crop is harvested with the utmost care and precision, resulting in the highest quality of feeds for the cows.  Our contracted Veterinarians treat each cow with as much care and concern as their own family. In addition, many of the 100 plus employees of the farm are family members, across several generations.

THE COWS

It may seem impossible to provide Paloma Dairy’s many Holstein milk cows with individualized care and provision, but, utilizing the latest RFID technology and feed management software, Paloma dairy does. Each cow on the facility has an RFID chip that is placed in her left ear, like an earring, which transmits the cow identification to a handheld computer. The entire health record of that specific cow is available in the handheld computer to a veterinarian or employee. As a result, the veterinarian and employee can check on the health of each cow daily. These informed decisions allow for cow care, on a cow to cow basis.

THE FARM

Sunset Farms, managed by brothers Robert and Kyle, grows Alfalfa, Corn Silage, Wheat, Barley and Cotton across the 7000 acres of flooded or pivot irrigated farmland.  Sunset Farms utilizes water from the local irrigation district and can directly manage how it is utilized for best crop and dairy production.

RENEWABLE NATURAL GAS

Sunoma Renewable Biofuels began injecting renewable natural gas into our Southwest Gas interconnection on November 4, 2021.  This fuel will be used to fuel trucks with energy from our cows!  This process is carbon negative (pulling carbon from the natural process of growing crops and making milk and using it to power our nations energy needs.)
